In A Republic Government, The Citizen Is King: William Federer On The Responsibility Of Christians T0 Participate In Politics
Yes, you read that correctly. In the Republic Government of the United States, you, the citizen, are king!
On WarRoom, Episode 3896, which aired September 11, 2024, Dr. Dave Bratt (DB) interviewed historian and writer William Federer (WF). Federer is the well-known founder and author of American Minute.
In this interview, he discusses America’s Republic form of government. A Republic is a representative government, aka self-governing, consent of the governed, people rule through their representatives. This essentially means that the citizen is king. This is the form of government established and passed to us by our Founding Fathers. Mr. Federer urges Christians to stand up and vote in order to maintain this unique self-governing system that we have been bequeathed.
What Is The Duty Of Christians To Participate In Their Government?
DB: Hello Bill. Share with us some insights that you have.
What is the duty of Christians to participate in their government, in all spheres of life? God has put three spheres in life—country or nation/state, church, and family. What is our responsibilities in all of these spheres?
WF: The most common form of government in world history is king—Nimrod, Pharaoh, Caesar, Kaiser, Salazar, they keep getting bigger. And kings have subjects who are subjected to their will.
Ancient Israel, when they came out of Egypt, around 1400 BC, they had a Republic. The first time in world history where you had millions of people and no king. The Greeks later had democracies and the Romans [had a] Republic.
Citizen Is The King
In a Republic the citizen is the king. We pledge allegiance to the flag and to the Republic. We’re basically pledging allegiance to us being in charge of ourselves.
So when people don’t vote they’re surrendering their sovereignty. It’s like a negligent king. And it goes a little bit more serious, because by not voting you’re giving your consent to every wicked thing that’s out there.
Tacit Admission—Speak Now Or Forever…
It’s called the rule of tacit admission. It’s in a wedding ceremony. If you’re silent when they say the wedding vows, you’re actually giving consent to the wedding vows.
If you’re silent when they’re killing babies, you’re giving your consent to killing babies. You’re an accessory.
If you’re silent when they’re teaching the trans agenda, then you’re giving your consent to the teaching of the trans agenda.
You’re not being spiritual by not being involved; you’re being a negligent king.

Government Systems In History
Now, I go through the founding of the country [in my book, Who Is The King In America?]. The Puritans looked back to ancient Israel as this model of citizens ruling themselves.
But, in the 1700’s you had this Great Awakening Revival and people said, “don’t be involved in government because it’s worldly.” It’s almost a self-fulfilling prophecy. Don’t get involved in government because it’s worldly. Well, why is it worldly? Because we’re not involved in government.
So, the situation is that we the people are ruling bottom up, versus the king ruling top down. But if we don’t? What happened to ancient Israel? They eventually got a tyrant king. What happened to the Greeks. They eventually got a Philip of Macedon, an Alexander the Great…
What happened to ancient Rome? They eventually flipped and instead of a bottom up Republic, they turned into Julius Caesar ruling as a dictator, top down.
A Republic
So, a Republic. That’s when Ben Franklin was asked by Mrs. Powel in Philadelphia, “What did you give us, a monarchy or a republic?” And he said, “A Republic, if you can keep it.”
How do you keep it? If the people stay involved. If the people realize they are the king.
And, matter of fact, voting is the least of your duties. You’re supposed to be involved in the whole system. Go through the training. Be the person on the other side of the table asking for the driver’s license, get involved in all the races, take the responsibility as the king for our country.
For Future Generations
And we do it for the children’s sake; that “good men leave an inheritance to his children’s children.”

Hezekiah got sick and recovered. Ambassadors from Babylon came and he showed them all the treasure. And Isaiah said, “What did you show them?” He said, “I showed them everything.” [Isaiah said,] “Well, someday all that treasure [will be carried to Babylon] and your sons will be eunuchs in the palace of Babylon.” Hezekiah said, “Well, as long as it’s going to be okay during my lifetime.” You’re like, that’s it, Hezekiah? You feel like reaching through the pages of the Bible and slapping him.
When David was told that his son with Bathsheba was going to die, he threw himself on his face and fasted.
Our founders sacrificed their prosperity for their posterity. And today it’s flipped. People are sacrificing their posterity for prosperity. We’re adding a trillion dollars to the debt every 100 days and we don’t care that our kids are going to be stuck with it.
i think it’s time that we grow up and realize that we the people are in charge. And if we don’t take that seriously, like in ancient Israel, you’re going to get a Saul who will kill all the priests. And it’s going to turn into a tyranny.
[Israel’s Republic] lasted as long as the priests taught the law. When the priests stopped teaching the law, every man did what was right in their own eyes. They turned back the clock, then they got a king, Saul, who a short time later killed all of the priests. -William Federer quoted in an article celebrating the faith of our nation’s forefathers.
Losing Our Love Of Country And Love Of God: Is There Time To Recover?
DB: How did it come to this? Why have we become so weak and so lazy? There’s a lot of very good people out there, I’m at a great university, kids are engaged in the Bible, but our culture over all, we’re losing our patriotism. I heard RFK Jr. with a stat yesterday. He gave 80% of young people, just 20 years ago, said they love this country. And today that number is down to 20%. So, the love of country, the love of God, the love of our great institutions, the willingness to take part, why are the wheels falling off and is there time to recover?
Deconstruction
WF: It’s the socialist tactic called deconstruction where you separate people from their past. Get them into a neutral where they don’t remember where they came from, then you brainwash them with the future you have planned for them.
It’s like a sales technique.
If I were a toothpaste salesman, the first thing I’d do is tell you negative things about the toothpaste you’re currently brushing with. “You’re still brushing with that stuff? Haven’t you read it will eat the enamel off your teeth?” Ooh, you’re repulsed by it. Now I have you in a neutral. You’re open-minded for all the toothpaste out there. Then I would give you the pitch for the cardinal breath freshener.
So [teachers] go into the classrooms and tell the class negative things about the Founders. “They took land from Indians, sold people into slavery.” Forget the fact they gave you a country where you’re the king. Forget that. They were just bad.
So, the kids are repulsed by it. Now you have the kids in a neutral, they’re open-minded. Then you give your pitch for socialism, or LGBT or trans or Islamism, and these kids are like, “Oh, okay”.
When you cut the ties from the past, that anchor’s not there, the boat drifts. That’s why it’s so important that we go back and educate the young people that, in America, we’re unique out of 6000 years of recorded human history, where the citizen gets to be the king. And if we don’t re-educate ourselves, we’re going to lose it.
It’s all on the line this [2024 Presidential] election. I think it’s no more gradual, this is it.

God help us! But most of all, God help them.

Heavenly Father,
Praise You! Praise You. Thank You for America. Thank You for our Founding Fathers, their intellect, their desire for freedom, and their wisdom in looking back to the nation of Israel coming out of tyrannical Egypt as a model of the American Republic. Thank You for the Founders’ acknowledgement in the Declaration of Independence of the first authority of “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.” What a foundation! What a blessed people we are to have You as our One True God!
Father, we thank You for the writings of William Federer. We thank You for his gift of communication and his way of joining the fundamentals of our Founding, Scripture, analogies, and Christian action to teach a subject and make it stick. Continue to bless him, and American citizens, in his writing, speaking, and flagship American Minute website, books, and devotionals.
Lord, grant us grace to take our responsibility as kings seriously, to guard our sovereignty, and to be vigilant in our duties to You and to other citizens. Father, we came so close to the brink of destruction, but You saved us! How can we ever thank You for saving our nation?
Grant all of Your people discernment and wisdom to know the times. Help us to know that we “must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it” (Hebrews 2:1). The false prophets and false teachers of our day are only growing louder.
Grant us grace to seek lost souls and to equip each other to do Your work on earth. In the strength of Christ, may we overcome all fear and rescue the weak from those who “promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption” (2 Peter 2:19).
Fill us to overflowing with Your Holy Spirit, with His courage and strength, that we “may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11). Grant us the holy bravery “to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm” (Ephesians 6:13).
