Charles Spurgeon: Past Deliverance Begets Faith

“David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” 1 Samuel 17:37
This is not a promise if we consider only the words, but it is truly so as to its sense; for David spoke a word which the Lord endorsed by making it true. He argued from past deliverances that he should receive help in a new danger. In Jesus all the promises are Yea and Amen to the glory of God by us, and so the Lord’s former dealings with His believing people will be repeated.
Come, then, let us recall the Lord’s former loving-kindnesses. We could not have hoped to be delivered aforetime by our own strength; yet the Lord delivered us. Will He not again save us? We are sure He will. As David ran to meet his foe, so will we. The Lord has been with us, He is with us, and He has said, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Why do we tremble? Was the past a dream? Think of the dead bear and lion. Who is this Philistine? True, he is not quite the same, and is neither bear nor lion; but then God is the same, and His honour is as much concerned in the one case as in the other. He did not save us from the beasts of the forest to let a giant kill us. Let us be of good courage.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Earnestly and humbly we come before You, with praise and thanksgiving for blessing, and for the blessing of, our nation.
With confidence we draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). At this time, our future is uncertain and our freedom is in danger. The powers of evil have taken hold of many. People within our own nation, whether government officials or those directed by the government or those directed by a foreign government, actively work against American citizens. These people are, and have been, tirelessly working to destroy our economy, educational system, rule of law, courts, government, supply chains, medical care, religious observances, everything.
Father, You see it. You know it (Exodus 2:23-25). Hear the great outcry in our nation. Your revelation gives assurance that any great outcry, like the one heard from Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:20), will come before You.
We have only to look at America’s humble beginnings, and times of conflict from then until now, to see Your Hand guarding this nation from enemies foreign and domestic. Fog, hurricanes, tornadoes, and torrential storms of all kinds have intervened when it seemed that defeat was near. Not only nature, but chance events of death, encountering the enemy at vulnerable times, a random thought to check a soldier’s boots, and even prayers about peanuts have been used to save America. Most of all, You gave us leaders who sought Your help in prayer and designated days of prayer for the entire nation. And throughout our history You worked miracle after miracle on our behalf. Praise You, The God Who See Us!
Father, at this point in 2023, we have no leaders in the Executive Office who seek Your help or designate days for the nation to pray, unless they have already been designated into law. In a few states, we have leaders who seek You. In President Trump, we had a leader who upheld our values, sought You in prayer, and led the nation to pray. But today, in 2023, the federal Executive Office and most of the states are filled with vile and reprehensible people who are greedy and power hungry. Moreover, they prostrate themselves to the god of government and lead others to do the same.
Yet, You know that You have many people in the United States of America. And we plead for Your help. We are asking for miracles, divine interventions to stop the corruptive and evil forces of minions in Washington D.C. who are trying to destroy our nation, and/or those who are allowing it to be destroyed. Specifically, we pray for Your divine justice toward Barack Obama, who viciously hates the USA. Only You know his dark, evil, and hateful heart. Father, we ask You to heal the internal wounds that have caused his massive bitterness and have manifested in such a way that does more harm to innocent people than any war. He could always move if he hates this country so much, we don’t understand. Thank You that we can’t understand such depravity. We pray also Your divine justice against Joe Biden. His being is so permeated with evil, that he doesn’t think it is wrong. Many other enemies exist, but stomping the head takes out the serpent, at least, for a time..
Grant us justice against our adversaries (Luke 18:3)! Jesus promised, “will not God give justice to His elect, who cry to Him day and night? Will He delay long over them? I tell you, He will give justice to them speedily (Luke 18:7-8).
We pray believing our prayers are answered (Mark 11:24). We have a great history of Your past deliverances, divine providence, miraculous interventions, upon which to base our faith in You, Our Faithful and Almighty God. Like David we argue from these past deliverances that we should receive help in a new danger. In Jesus all the promises are Yea and Amen to the glory of God by us, and so Your former dealings with Your believing people will be repeated. Sovereign Lord, You Who delivered us from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will also deliver us from these Philistines (1 Samuel 17:37).
